The System Registry

The system registry is a hierarchical database that Microsoft Windows uses to hold configuration information for the operating system and many of the programs installed on the system. It holds information such as the various locations of important executable programs, which programs to associate with which kinds of files, and the locations of libraries.

Note

The registry is extremely important for the operating system to run correctly. If you fool around in there and break something, you can do serious damage to the system, possibly making it unbootable, so make any changes carefully.
