This chapter develops a simple approach to statistical power analysis that is based on the widely used F statistic. The F statistic (or some transformation of F) is used to test statistical hypotheses in the general linear model (Horton, 1978; Tatsuoka, 1993b), a model that includes all of the variations of correlation and regression analysis (including multiple regression), analysis of variance and covariance (ANOVA and ANCOVA), t-tests for differences in group means, tests of the hypothesis that the effect of treatments takes on a specific value, or a value different from zero.
