The format is attached to the variable LITERACY, but the value of the LITERACY
variable is still internally stored as a numeric variable. This is verified by a PROC
MEANS statement whose output is provided in Display 8.7. In Display 8.7, all eight
nonmissing variable values are used in the summary statistics, including the two invalid
entries.
