Inferential Statistics II: Parametric Hypothesis Testing
Abstract
This chapter introduces the key concepts of parametric hypothesis testing. Terms such as the degree of confidence, significance level, p-value, and null and alternative hypotheses are explained. The difference between parametric and nonparametric hypothesis testing is made clear. The two error types that can occur in hypothesis testing, type I and type II errors, are described, and ways to avoid them are discussed. The different types of data that can be used for hypothesis testing are outlined: one sample, two-sample paired data, and two-sample unpaired data.
