What is this need to have such curious things as puppets? Why do we respond so deeply to a puppet? All great art forms, both high art and low culture, have at least one major dalliance with a puppet, or at least inanimate characters impossibly coming to life. Literature has Pinocchio and Frankenstein; myths have the Golem and Prometheseus; Opera has The Tales of Hoffman; dance has Petruschka and Coppelia; cinema has simply dozens ranging from Metropolis through Dead of Night, Chucky and Mannequin, to The Iron Giant.
