Chapter 21. vSAN Core Features

Storage virtualization has evolved and continues to evolve. The latest trend in storage virtualization is the concept of combining compute, network, and storage resources into a logical entity referred to as hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). The storage part of HCI is done by pooling storage that is locally attached to multiple hypervisors and presented to storage clients as a unified storage resource. Most HCI vendors use NFS or iSCSI as the storage protocol through which they present the storage resources to the clients.

VMware created a tightly integrated HCI solution, called VMware Virtual SAN (vSAN), that is native to vSphere.
