In its twelfth five-year economic plan, approved in March 2011, China made its growing ambitions clear. The country that is operating the world’s manufacturing hub will now build a design hub as well. Products with labels reading “Made in China” will, in effect, soon read “Designed in China.” China will become an end-to-end supplier to the world. It will do just about everything its trading partners now do—innovate, design, build, and deliver—and do it better.
