MENTORING ALTERNATIVES: SPONSORS, COACHES, REVERSE MENTORS, AND MENTORING CIRCLES

Do you need a sponsor or a coach? Or could a reverse mentor teach you something new? The popularity of formal programs has created opportunities for connections of all kinds. In this chapter we highlight the most novel and widespread approaches to developmental relationships. Sponsor, coach, reverse mentor, or mentoring circle—each of these offers an effective alternative to naturally occurring mentoring and can enhance your learning and development at any career stage. An important question for you to ask is: how can these alternatives contribute to my developmental network? (See Figure 6-1.)
