‘Never stop till the thing is done,’ was the watchword of John Hunter, the master surgeon who Smiles singles out for his approach to projects.
Hunter's maxim is really two parts. The second part is never to stop once you've started out. But importantly, the first part of his maxim is only to start out once you're completely sure that the job in hand is worthwhile and doable: “My rule is, deliberately to consider, before I commence, whether the thing be practicable. If it be not practicable, I do not attempt it.”
