‘Above all else try to win over the people’, says Machiavelli in Chapter 9. Which is pretty sound advice, because unless the people are on your side you have a desk and maybe a nice corner office, and that's about it. The medieval Italian class system was very much like the organisation chart of your office. There were very important people (VIPs) such as princes, quite important people (QIPs) such as nobles, and everyone else (they don't get an abbreviation).
