Being loved is great for family, pets and football teams. If you're in charge being loved is optional. It's better to be respected.

It is desirable, says Machiavelli famously in Chapter 17 of The Prince, ‘to be both loved and feared’. But given the choice, inspiring love comes a poor second to creating fear as a technique for obtaining and preserving your power.
Inspiring fear isn't really considered something positive in the twenty-first century. Without reading too much into Machiavelli's language, his ‘fear’ is closer in character to what we would call ‘respect’ today. But he wrote fear, so I'll use that word.
