Sun Tzu states that, ‘Too frequent rewards signify that the enemy is at the end of his resources; too many punishments betray a condition of dire distress.’ When an army is reduced to either excessive reward or excessive punishment then it is a good indication that there is trouble ahead.
Although it is tricky to find examples of excessive use of punishment in the workplace there is no end to excessive rewards.
