For a long time people were expected to come to work, leave their emotions at the door and do their job. The inescapable fact that they were human beings was steadfastly ignored. There was no room for outside life and certainly not messy personal problems and overt displays of emotion. Being a stoic workaholic was the only way to be and considered a prerequisite for promotion.
