Production should be organized into work centers based on processes
or products. ere are two schools of thoughts about how a factory should
be laid out: whether to lay it out by process centers or by product ow,
which integrates dierent processes and machines into a cluster.
e denition of a cluster—sometimes called work cell—is that regard-
less of the process or machinery used, the layout allows the product to be
manufactured in a continuous ow through the cluster. For instance, a
