7.3.1. Overview

Data placement techniques can be classified into the following two schemes: 1) prediction-based [146], [28], [31], and 2) retrieval-based [48]. The former estimates the expected access pattern by analyzing the past references, the characteristics of the stored objects, and/or the association between the different objects. The latter analyzes the characteristics of the object retrieval to match it with the characteristics of the tape devices.
