Composite mechanics

Abstract

This chapter introduces the basic mechanics of composites. It starts by presenting a brief review on the laminate structure of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and classical laminate theory. Only basic mechanics equations are reviewed in this chapter, but more advanced topics can be found in the references. It then discusses a new type of fiber reinforcement, namely textile fabrics. Textile fabrics are distinctly different from more commonly used unidirectional tapes and possess many advantages over unidirectional tapes. General mechanics issues are then discussed. Attention is given to several dominant failure modes and factors affecting FRP durability. Finally, a discussion of finite element method (FEM) ...
