Abstract

In this chapter, the use of field testing to evaluate the performance of an installed fiber-reinforced polymer strengthening system is discussed. First, pull-off testing as a bond-assessment method is presented, and some concerns for using this method in the field are noted. Next, two well-known types of bridge performance testing are reviewed: strain and/or displacement monitoring under service loads, and proof load testing. Strain monitoring is presented in the context of girder load distribution testing. Here, types of instrumentation, concentrating on strain gauges, placement on the structure, and gauge selection are reviewed.
