Chapter 4. Modeling Heuristics

Introduction

In Chapter 3 we argued that a good modeling tool reduces the conceptual distance between the developer’s mental representation of a problem and the external representation needed for implementation. One of the examples we gave was the FORTRAN language. Since most people with science or engineering training learn to think in terms of manipulation of algebraic variables, FORTRAN allows a straightforward way to translate these thoughts about computations into usable form. In the ideal case one can picture the process as simply “transcribing” a mental representation into FORTRAN via a display terminal keyboard.
