1 Essential Modeling Heuristics

1.1 Introduction

In Structured Development for Real-Time Systems, Volume 1, Chapter 4 (Modeling Heuristics), we defined an essential model as one that describes those things that a system must do to be successful, regardless of the technology chosen to implement it. In Chapters 6 through 13 of Volume 1, we introduced a modeling notation, which, as we shall demonstrate, is adequate to express the details of an essential model rigorously.
