Dealing with telephone orders manually in this way is slow and
tedious; if the desired goods are not available it will be necessary to tell
the customer and suggest possible substitute items.
It seems quite clear that dealing with orders over the telephone is
more easily accommodated if a good computer system is in operation.
But this is not quite sufficient. After all, the computer record may not
be accurate. 'Shrinkage' through theft or breakages may leave the
actual stock at
a
lower level than the computer system would indicate.
