Chapter 20Mistakes Managers Make

When it comes to mistakes, leaders are no different than their followers: they've made their share of mistakes. These mistakes are often made by well‐intentioned leaders, and every mistake represents an opportunity to learn. But those lessons come at a cost, and when they involve safety, that cost can be harm to followers. The smarter strategy is to learn from the mistakes of other leaders. But that requires the time to find out about them, to study them and the willingness to admit, “I could make that same mistake.”

Here are six Big Mistakes managers make in managing safety performance:

  1. Failing To Prepare
  2. Driving Out All Fear
  3. Focusing On The Short Run
  4. Trying To Buy A Game
  5. Confusing Perception With Reality
  6. Communicating Without A Common Vocabulary

Discussion Questions
