I got my last ‘real’ job (i.e. working for somebody else) because somebody I had worked with previously now worked for the company to which I had applied. My first novel was published not because I’d gotten an agent or because I sent lots of submissions to publishers. Rather, it was because the guy who ran a bookshop that I frequented started a publishing company. I met the love of my life because a friend brought a friend to a party that I held.
