Introduction

  1. There have been many studies on the frequency and causes of entrepreneurial failure. In one well-known study Altman found that in 1970 more than 279 million-dollar firms went broke. He reports that one-third of bankrupt businesses were less than three years old, 53 percent were younger than five, and 23 percent were over ten. Altman et al. 1971. See also Kimberly 1980.
