If you currently have measures for your organization, chances are they are performance measures. Even if you’re doing metrics right, chances are you’re not measuring success. If you aren’t measuring anything—great! You have an opportunity to start at the end. If you’re currently measuring performance, I’m asking you to stop. Not stop using the ones you have, just don’t create any new ones, yet. Don’t build any new KPIs. Don’t develop a program around your performance measures. Instead, take the time to find measures of success first.
