Introduction to Brushes, Ink & Paper

If this is your first foray into sumi-e painting, start with playtime! Follow this routine when you’re ready to begin painting. (Step-by-step painting projects start shown here.)

1 Begin by using black ink. Not only is this the traditional way, but it is also the easiest. In addition to strong black ink, you will need a saucer in which to create gray tones. Put about a tablespoon of water in the saucer, dip the tip of your wet brush in the black ink, and mix. Try it out on scrap paper and add more water or ink, depending on how light or dark you want the mixture to be. Then rinse the brush.
