Emulating NC-Based Users
In the past, tools emulated dumb terminal-based users by opening a telnet session to a server and from a process that simulates the user. More recently, these tools have been extended to capture client/server traffic at the SQL level between PCs and database servers. They have also attempted to capture and replay X-terminal traffic (without much success), and the very latest versions can capture and replay simple HTML traffic from web browsers to web servers. We investigated tools such as Pure Performix Empower, Performance Awareness PreVue, and Mercury WebRunner in early 1997. None of them could capture and replay a Java applet that was connected to a backend process via an arbitrary protocol.
