As long as IPI disks enjoyed a performance advantage over SCSI disks, the extra cost of low-volume, IPI-specific disks could be justified. Now that SCSI disks are higher capacity, faster, cheaper, and more intelligent, IPI subsystems have become obsolete. Each SCSI disk nowadays contains about as much intelligence and RAM buffer as the entire IPI controller from a few years ago.
An SBus IPI controller is available from Genroco, Inc., so that old disk subsystems can be migrated to current generation servers.
