The SuperSPARC server architecture was the first Sun product range to address the high end of the server marketplace. Two packages deliver the architecture: one low-cost package that can sit on or beside a desk in an office environment, and one package that maximizes expansion capacity, for the data center. These two packages contain scaled versions of the same architecture, and the investment in IC designs and operating system porting and tuning is shared by both machines. The same architecture was used by Cray Research SuperServers, Inc., in their much larger CS6400 package. This division of Cray was purchased by Sun during 1996.
