Trent rolled over and buried his head under the pillow as the sun began peeking through the blinds. It had been a long restless night and his alarm clock would be going off any minute. He had no idea how to get through the day. No plan at all, and yesterday had been such a great day he was afraid to ruin everything.

As he headed to school, he kept thinking about how to choose things about himself that might be different but also not so different that anyone could make fun of him. It was his only hope at keeping this new school experience the best one yet.

Emma was wearing a costume to school. Literally, she was wearing her Halloween costume from last year, complete with the unicorn headband with a horn and rainbow tail tied onto a belt over her leggings and a bright pink t-shirt. She was prancing the entire way because she wanted to make it “realistic.” Trent finally asked her why she was dressed up for school and Emma told him all about her teacher's challenge to come to school today as their best selves. She explained that when she was her best self, she always felt magical, like a unicorn, so she wanted to get into character. Trent felt a little embarrassed for her, but he felt something else that he couldn't put his finger on. What was it?

He realized what it was as he watched her prance through the parking lot to the front ...
