The Indian pharma industry got a boost after the post-patent era in 1980–1990. Indian pharma companies got established and companies like Ranbaxy, Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, Ipca Laboratories, Wockhardt, Nicholas Pharma started competing with MNCs. Before the patent era, MNCs like Glaxo, Pfizer, Parke-Davis, Abbott were doing extremely well in the Indian market, with 75% of market share in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, leaving only 25% share to Indian pharma companies.
