There is a tendency when providing forecast metrics to upper management to roll up forecasting metrics into a few overall values that summarize forecast accuracy for the entire enterprise. This is often a mistake for two reasons: It masks underlying variability in forecast accuracy, and it makes taking action to improve forecasting difficult. The practical challenge of management reporting of forecasting is twofold: how to summarize forecast accuracy across a large number of SKUs in a way that is meaningful and how to highlight actions that are needed to improve the forecasting process.
