Introduction
Hierarchical supply chain planning (HSCP) and scheduling frameworks can address an extremely broad range of planning and management activities ranging from scheduling a single plant to planning and scheduling operations over an entire global supply chain. Further, one can apply a hierarchical planning approach to any supply chain function ranging from procurement to transportation to inventory management. In this chapter, we introduce hierarchical planning by first reviewing a general rationale for this type of planning framework. Next, we review a generic framework for an HSCP system.
