Plasma-assisted surface treatment of aluminium alloys to combat wear

Abstract:
Application of plasma to those metals with a stable, tenacious oxide film is a key factor in surface treatment to ensure sufficient adhesion of a coating to the substrate and acceptable performance of the coating. This chapter introduces typical metal and ceramic coatings produced by plasma-assisted processes on aluminium to enhance tribological properties. Hard ceramic coatings below a certain thickness have no beneficial effect, but thick coatings or the addition of a metal interlayer on aluminium will increase significantly their wear resistance.
