In a new academic position, there is much to learn in a short time. Looking back on just the first few years as an assistant professor, I find that I improved more in my teaching, learned more about my research area, and gained more skills through my service activities than I did in the entirety of my graduate schooling. I think many of us had the illusion that we would be prepared when we arrived on campus for our first academic job.
