To truly grasp the complexities of sustainability reporting, it is best to look at complex situations where a highly visible CEO took a stance on sustainability. The Monsanto evolution since the late 1980s is a case in point.

In 1997, Monsanto’s (then) CEO Robert Shapiro spun off the company’s chemical operations into a separate company (Solutia). He focused the “new” Monsanto on biology and agriculture (combined with chemistry) under the banner of “Food, Health, Hope.”
