One of the most ambitious endeavours of the European Union is the establishment of a single
European market, transforming the whole Union into an internal market for producers and con-
sumers alike: Article 26 (2) of the Lisbon Treaty in continuation of earlier versions of the
European treaties outlines the objectives: “The internal market shall comprise an area without
internal frontiers in which the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital is ensured
