I called Bridget at 5:30 p.m. to tell her I’d finished early and that I’d be home for supper.
“That’s nice,” she said. My antennae went up immediately. Bridget never talked that way unless something was wrong.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“We’ll talk about it when you get home,” she said.
“Can’t you give me a heads-up?” I asked.
“Not right now,” she said.
