New boot images based on Windows PE 5.0 are created when you install ConfigMgr 2012 R2 or upgrade from SP 1 to R2. If you are upgrading from SP 1, existing boot images are not upgraded to Windows PE 5.0. While you could continue to use these Windows PE 4.0-based boot images, they are officially unsupported in ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and might cause problems. One of the first post-upgrade tasks to thus perform is to transition all your task sequences to the new default boot images or new Windows PE 5.0-based boot images. As discussed in the “Down-Level Boot Images” section, there are also potential problems with the new Windows PE 5.0-based boot images on older hardware and virtual machines (VMs).
