Microsoft "Active Directory" [1] was introduced with Windows 2000 and includes a number of technologies, such as Kerberos (authentication) and LDAP (directory services) which have been integrated into a standard framework for system configuration on the Microsoft Windows platform. SMS (System Management Server) is a separate product capable of running independently of Active Directory and containing some additional functionality (monitoring and "inventory control"), as well as an alternative approach to software delivery.
