An architect designs a building by creating a blueprint (Figure 5.1). An engineer designs a new part by creating a schematic drawing. A tailor designs a suit by creating a pattern. There are many different facets of design, but all designers use a standard method to succinctly communicate the details of their designs. As you take on the role of systems designer, you will need to be able to capture and organize all the components of the system in a document.
