6 Work Systems
You will begin your work as a system designer with work systems (Figure 6.1). Of all the types of systems, the work system exists in the greatest number in an organization and is the easiest to understand. Work systems can often be found on an organizational chart because they are functional units like shipping, production, and accounting. Although you may be able to identify work systems in your organization, they are most likely lacking some components of a formal system. The Shingo Institute’s work system map is a way to formalize the work systems in your organization.
