Chapter 3. What Is File Sharing?

File sharing means storing a set of files on a fileserver, which could be a central computer or a network-attached storage device, and making it possible for any number of people to retrieve those files over any type of computer network, just as if those files were located on their own hard disks (Figure 3-1).

Many different machines can access a file server, whether they're connected directly via Ethernet, over wireless AirPort (Wi-Fi), or via the Internet.
