Chapter 7. Install and Use Parallels Desktop

Parallels Desktop was the first virtualization environment for Mac OS X, and it's attracted a massive and loyal following. Unlike Boot Camp, Parallels lets you run Windows without having to reboot your Mac. (To learn more about Parallels, turn back to Parallels Desktop, p. 21.) Among the noteworthy features in version 5 of Parallels Desktop are these:

  • A MacLook theme, which gives windows in Windows the appearance of Mac OS X windows, and Crystal mode, which goes beyond the existing Coherence mode to make Windows, and Parallels itself, disappear almost entirely

  • SmartSelect, which lets you associate any program (Windows or Mac) with any file type, so that double-clicking a file opens the appropriate application ...
