Chapter . Prepare for 80 MB of Fonts
Before you start using Word 2004, be warned: the first time any user actually runs the application, nearly 80 fonts, occupying 80 MB of disk space, will be installed in that user’s ~/Library/Fonts
folder. Note that this font installation is not part of the Office installation process discussed in the previous section; it’s part of Word’s “first run” behavior. Surprisingly, Word doesn’t ask permission or even notify the user that it’s about to install all these fonts. Even worse, some of these fonts may have the same names as, and will therefore conflict with, fonts already installed in /Library/Fonts
as part of Mac OS X.
