This section provides you with a quick reference to how Word 2004’s preferences, menus, toolbars, and dialogs have changed in comparison to Word X. It also lists a few prominent bug fixes.

New in Word 2004


  • The “Macro virus protection” checkbox has been moved to the Security pane, where it’s now called “Warn before opening a file that contains macros.”

  • The “Enable Quartz text smoothing” checkbox is gone (because text smoothing is now always on by default).
