Jailbreaking: What, Why, and How
Jailbreaking has become the common term to describe the procedure to free your iPhone from its Apple-imposed "jail cell," thus gaining unfettered access to the full contents of the iPhone's directory structure, including the root level as just described. Jailbreaking can also refer to related activities, such as unlocking the iPhone. With unlocking, you open the phone so that it works with a carrier other than its designated one (in the United States, for example, that would be a carrier other than AT&T).
