As I’ve said already and will say again, I don’t think it’s helpful or appropriate to be paranoid when it comes to online privacy. I don’t want you to live in fear, or to worry that the slightest misstep online will ruin your life. Instead, I want you to have a clear understanding of the facts.

This chapter provides an overview of what you might risk merely by using the internet in some way. That “might” is important, because so many variables are involved. We’ve all known people who rode bikes without wearing helmets and still managed not to suffer had injuries, or who smoked their entire lives and never got cancer.
