Paper has some amazing properties. It is light, flexible, easy to carry, and recovers well from mishaps. Accidentally spill a glass of water on it, and the text will still be readable after just a few dabs with a paper towel. A digital device, trust us, will not fare so well.

But digital paper—whether it is a touchscreen tablet, smartphone, e-reader, or computer—has many enviable properties too. It can be copied at no cost and sent through the air or a tiny wire at the speed of light. It can talk. It can display video, animations, and interactive diagrams. Its text and pictures can be changed in an instant by someone sitting halfway across the world.
