Before you start using payroll, you set up its features, including state or local items, schedules, and employee records. Accurate payroll reports hinge on a complete year’s information. To minimize data entry, start your payroll January 1. If you start mid-year, plan to start on the nearest quarter: March 1, June 1, or September 1.
