Word adjusts the document
margins.
Note: If you plan on printing the document, do not
make the margin too small or your document may
not print properly. Most printers cannot handle
margins smaller than about 0.25 inches, although
see your printer manual to confirm this. In
particular, see if your printer offers a “borderless”
printing option.
SET MARGINS USING THE
TOOLBOX
1 Open the document you want to
format.
2 Display the Formatting Palette.
Note: See Chapter 3 for information on how to
display the Formatting Palette.
3 Open the Document Margins
panel.
4 In the Margins section, use the
text boxes to specify the margin
sizes in inches.
Set the Document Margins
You can control the size of a document’s text area by setting
the document’s margins, the blank space that surrounds the
document text. Decreasing the margins allows more text to fit
on each page, which is useful when printing a long document.
Increasing the margins decreases the amount of text that
can fit on each page, but the added white space can make
the document look more appealing.
The standard margins are 1 inch on the left, right, top, and bottom. You can set the
header margin, which is the space between the header and the top of the page, and
the footer margin, which is the space between the footer and the bottom of the page.

SET MARGINS USING THE RULER
1 Open the document you want to
format.
2 Move the over the right edge
of the ruler’s left margin area
( changes to ).
3 Click and drag the edge of the
margin to set the margin width.
I am going to print and bind my
document. Do I need to increase
my left and right margins to
allow for the binding?
No. Remember that the bound part of
the page appears on the right for some
pages and on the left for others, so your text will
appear offset on all pages if you adjust both margins.
It is better to set the size and position of the gutter,
extra white space added to the inside margin to
handle document binding. Click Format and then
click Document to display the Document dialog. Click
the Margins tab, type the width of the gutter in the
Gutter text box, and then click OK.
Can I change the default
margins?
Yes. The default margins are
defined in Word’s Normal
template, which is the
template used for most Word
documents. To change the margins in the
Normal template, click Format and then click
Document to display the Document dialog.
Click the Margins tab and then set the margins
you want to use. Click Default, and when Word
asks you to confirm the changes to the Normal
template, click Yes. Click OK to close the dialog.
